IMAX to launch theatre in Coimbatore
IMAX Corporation is expanding its footprint in India to launch theaters in Coimbatore Planned to open in the spring of 2022, the deal marks the first contract between IMAX and the Broadway megaplex, a global entertainment technology company, to bring the first IMAX theater to the city.

Imax Corporation and regional megaplex chain Broadway Megaplex have announced a partnership to build a new IMAX theater in Coimbatore. Planned to open in the spring of 2022, the deal marks the first contract between IMAX and the Broadway megaplex, the global entertainment technology company that will bring the first IMAX theater to the city.
“We are pleased to sign our first contract with Broadway Megaplex, a regional multiplex chain in South India, which will bring Imax to a new megaplex location and expand our base in India beyond major cities,” said Giovanni Dolce. Sales Officer, IMAX.
IMAX’s first large format screen was launched in India in 2001
In 2018, IMAX had contracted to bring nine new big theaters to India. The announcement of new theaters in 2018 has increased the total number of IMAX seats in India to 40.
IMAX’s first large format screen was launched in India in 2001, but it was difficult for the company to expand it. Things changed as the government became more open about facilitating business growth, including malls and Western-style multiplexes.
While IMAX adds more screens, India lags behind in terms of premium big design. With the exhibition infrastructure and its price, the number of large screen mirrors made in India is low. As of 2018, only six of the images have been transferred to Imax.
