Coimbatore industries employ people through Human Resource firms

For many companies in Coimbatore that want to increase their employee or worker strength and still control costs, “temping” is becoming a preferred option now.

In this globally-adopted system, Human Resource firms recruit and temporarily employ a person at their client unit. The associate remains an employee of the HR firm for the specific period though he works at the deputed (main employer) company.

P.S. Srikumar, Vice-President (Sales and Marketing) of TalentPro, says in India, it is mainly the banking, telecom, FMCG sectors that went into temping for direct sales jobs. Companies prefer temporary workers for non-core activities and go in for employees on permanent rolls for higher designations.

The “temping” opportunities are more in “go-to-the-market” sectors. In cities such as Coimbatore that have a large number of manufacturing units, the potential is more for organised temping.

P. Muthuvellappan, chairman for the Coimbatore centre of National Institute of Personnel Management, says there are several companies in Coimbatore that have gone in for temping during the recent years. While it was the multi-national companies that initially went in for temping, the manufacturing units have also started doing so now.

“This trend will only increase,” he says. These workers and employees receive all the statutory benefits though they are not on the rolls of the company they work for.

Most of the companies prefer temping for non-core sectors.

With severe shortage in availability of skilled workers, the industries prefer to have permanent workers for core activities. Some of them have even an entire section, such as maintenance, run on temping.

The main benefit for the companies is cost and flexibility in employment, he says.

The section or activity for the temporary workers varies according to the needs of each unit.

M. Arumugam, state vice-president of AITUC, says several institutions and organisations do not have direct recruits now for their non-core tasks.

The employer should have all the employees in their units on their rolls and provide them all statutory benefits.
